This Train Stops for No One

The train of time stops for no one.
Not for the farmer, the celebrity, the inmate.
The journey proceeds, relentless,
and we can only gaze through the window
at the landscape which taunts us
like an unruly child safe within the confines
of the school doors.

Some have tried to slow the train
to get a longer, better look
at that slow moving river just passed.
But, even when the train slows,
the river does not
it continues flowing incessantly
to a destination known only to itself.
(I did, however, notice the frogs leaping this time)

So, this train is a curious thing.
It cannot be stopped completely,
but we can slow its pace a little
to make us feel like the ride
was a little longer.

How can this be done?
Just look out the window at the marvels that pass!
The more you concentrate on these marvels,
the more the train will decelerate
to allow you a second glance.

Oh, and what there is to see!
Mountain sunsets glowing like embers,
the song of the wood thrush echoing through the forest
like a pan flute deep within a forest cave,
soft green moss that soothes the tired body.
All these things and more are here for you!

Do not try to stop the train
you will not succeed.
Live each day as if it were a landscape
visible through the curtained windows
of your passenger car.
