Breakfast in Paynesville
Smiles at the door
young boy and his friends
pause their storytelling to admit me
The room is alive with conversation
small town topics abound
the kitchen vibrates with vocal intensity
farmers daughters giggle and point
paper plates, rationed orange juice and coffee
freshly killed sausage
The atmosphere is intimate, friendly, vibrant
The cook solicits seconds among the crowd
Restless teenagers sporting icons of identity
long to break free from the anchor
See the world, grace the malls of society
Join suburbia, faces without names
when the dream is finally realized
and a curious emptiness fills their souls
Only then will the winds they defied
carry them back to the VFW Rotary Breakfasts
