Smiling in Winter

Winds howl through the swaying trees
patterns of white dance and swirl
steal your vision and seek out small crevasses
in a hastily zipped winter jacket

Dragging your feet through the cold powder
ahead the dim, blurry image of a large dwelling
candles burn in the windows
a cadence in the fearsome melody

Entering you discover a warm crackling fire
beckoned by the wafting scent of hot cocoa
conversation thaws your weakened spirit

Rescue is always near
gazing through hard glass skin
we can only imagine the fear behind the force
a desperate plea that once went unanswered

No information superhighway
no energy carried by subterranean wires
the horses broke through the barricade
passage obliterated by angry winds
ax dulled, bones chilled by damp clothing
as the night slowly steals your breath.
