One of my favorite hobbies is Digital Photography.  Jodi and I have completely converted to digital and in 1999 I took nearly 1,000 pictures!  I'm pretty much the PHD (push-here-dummy) expert and Jodi does the more complicated stuff.

My current equipment consists of the following:

The Camera:

Right now I'm using a Canon Powershot S10:

  • 2.1 Megapixel
  • Reaallllyy small!!
  • 35-70mm zoom lens
  • 32MB, 2x8MB compact flash cards
  • USB connection to my PC

This is my second PHD camera, and by far the best.  I used a Kodak DC210 Plus Zoom for over a year.  It worked well for 3.5x5 and 4x6 photos, but this one will do 8x10.

Product Large Image The Printer:

You gotta have a printer for Digital Photography.  Right now I have a cheap-o HP DeskJet 712C.

  • 3ppm color (more like 0.5ppm in hi-res 600 dpm emulation mode)
  • 300dpi
  • Costs about $1 per page to print high quality color photos (2x4x6 or 4x 3.5x5)

I'm going to upgrade this sucker eventually and get an Epson Sylus Photo 870 which is much better for printing long lasting photos.  Photos from a cheap ink jet will begin to fade after only a year or two.

Desktop Solution The Computer:

Yep, ya need a computer too.   I have a Micron Millenia:

  • 400 MHz Pentium II
  • Sony CDRW (a CD writer is a MUST for storage of digital photos)
  • 128M RAM
  • 20M Hard Disk
  • Voodoo 2 video accelerator
  • 17" monitor
  • SB Live sound card
  • 56K modem

Of course, I also use my PC for other stuff, like games, music, personal finance, etc.

The Scanner:

We have a gazillion pics sitting in Photo Albums that we are scanning and putting in digital photo albums.  Ya need a scanner for that!  I have a cheezy Microtek SlimScan:

  • 300x600 dpi
  • 36 bit color depth
  • 8.5" x 11" scan area

Despite its cheeziness, the scanner has served me well so far.  I will be upgrading, though, as soon as I can afford it.

I have taken quite a number of artistic pics since I first got into digital photography in early 1999.  Find some of my more interesting pics below:

Album Name Content
Kids & Fun (2000) Pictures inspired by or in the presence of kids!  The wonderful thing about kids is that they are wonderful photographic subjects.  That's why I recommend having a few.
Patterns (2000) Pictures of patterns, natural and man-made.  I like to use these for things like backgrounds or textures.
Travel (2000) Pictures taken during excursions.
Art (2000) Pictures that have been altered artistically. [coming soon]
